PLAY AND LEARN WITH MIFFY
2010 - ongoing, Venezuela
Who does not know her – miffy – the small female rabbit from the series of picture books drawn and written by Dutch artist Dick Bruna? His brilliant design legacy inspired Butterfly Works to co-create new local characters abroad.
The project ‘play and learn with miffy’ brings alive the stories of the foreign friends in various emerging economies to contribute creatively to the process of Early Child Development.
In collaboration with Mercis bv, the publishing company of Dick Bruna, Butterfly Works initiated the global expansion of miffy´s world of friends.
Intentionally and unintentionally, Dick Bruna designed his miffy books in such a way that it stimulates the development of children in a playful manner. Early Child Development (ECD) is the physical, mental, social, and emotional development of children until roughly six years of age and is the period of greatest growth and development in a person’s life.
In many countries, time and knowledge is unfortunately not available to all parents and caretakers to stimulate children in their development process. This inspired Butterfly Works to use the design legacy of Dick Bruna to co-design overseas fellows of miffy and actively stimulate elements of Early Child Development.
The start of the project was in South America, Together with local illustrators, writers and ECD specialists ‘play and learn with miffy’ co-created a culture specific companion of miffy, who will play the leading part in children books for local children up to the age of four, which address to particular themes important for the stimulation of Early Child Development and focus on local topics, issues, customs and practices. The projects additional benefit is the use of new media as educational games supporting ECD.
We are proud to present the first friend of miffy, her Venezuelan companion yoyo. Please visit the website play and learn with miffy to find out more.
