UNSUNG PEACE HEROES - THE WINNERS
Wednesday, February 25, 2009
On the 26th of Feb 2009, the winners of our Peace Hero prize were welcomed at a press event in Nairobi to receive their prizes, be interviewed and get their photos taken for the full page add in the newspaper.
We were thrilled by the overwhelming response via sms and web in nominating some of the most amazing people. People who helped others in trouble during the violence. These are exactly the type of stories we hoped to find and which existed in abundance. People who took in orphans, brought food and clothes and shelter to those in refugee camps, hid people from other tribes at a risk to their own lives, stood in front of angry crowds and convinced them to lay down their weapons, people who wrote songs of peace, organised peace marches and rallies and youth groups all to stop the violence and build trust again amongst warring factions.
We're really glad to be able to put these people and their stories in the spotlight.
see the project website for the winners and their photos and stories.
Thanks to the excellent jury for their commitment and time and successful fund raising for extra prizes.
