2003 - Morocco
A collection of baskets made of old car tires.
Original concept: Butterfly Works
The baskets were originally intended for the local market in Southern Morocco. When Butterfly Works saw them during a trip in Morocco we got inspired and decided to collaborate with the local craftsmen to develop new shapes which were suitable for the Dutch market. Butterfly Works bought these baskets and sold them to design stores such as Frozen Fountain. After a slow start in 2003 the interest in the baskets blossomed to unexpected heights. Many brands became inspired to sell them and they are right now widely available in Europe.
The whole production process led to new questions and insights for Butterfly Works, which we were able to explore further in an elaborate research for NCDO. Based upon this study, we developed the concept ‘Unseen Products’: an online market for home products made in developing countries.
